Now is a good of a time than any to have a little extra spending money, and if you had kids (or grandkids) in your house at any point in your life, there's a decent chance there's something worth some money in your basement or attic.
What's worth money to a collector depends on timing, so with that in mind, Sapphire Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing of Central Queens has a look at five items that you should check to see if you might have in a box somewhere!
Comic Books
Most toys and collectibles need to be in mint condition to be of any value, but some comic books have been worth thousands even in bad condition.
If you have any comics that meet any of this criteria, you should look into their value: from the 1960s or earlier, a superhero story, or a horror story.
Hot Wheels
Hot Wheels are popular and easy to come by today, but originals from the 1960s and 70s can be worth a pretty penny – especially if the cars have red lines on the tires; those are worth more because they are older models.
Metal Signs
Retro metal signs are popular, but if you have the real thing, they can draw you some real money. Here are some features that will increase value: little to no nicks or rust spots, double-sided signs, and enamel paint. Metal lunch boxes from the 1970s or prior are also worth some money.
Pez Dispensers
Much like Hot Wheels, these are around today, but if you hung on to some from previous generations, they could be valuable.
Disney Memorabilia
In this case, you have to go way back for these to generally be worth money. By time the 1970s rolled around, this was all mass produced, but anything from Disneyland in the 1950s or 60s can be valuable, as can Mickey Mouse toys from that era or before.
As a general rule, if you're wondering if anything you have might carry value, just do a quick search for it on Amazon or an auction website like eBay.
